D. Flooding makes the soil desert.
S. 4: So unless the government has a good system of control, or can educate the people, the forests will slowly disappear – So if the government doesn’t have a good control system or educates people then the forests will gradually disappear
To 5: For where there are trees their roots break the soil up, allowing the rain to sink in and also bind the soil, thus preventing it being washed away easily, but where there are no trees, the soil becomes hard and poor. The rain falls on hard ground and flows away on the surface, causing floods and carrying away with it the rich topsoil, in which crops grow so well, when all the topsoil is gone, nothing remains but a worthless desert. – For places with trees, their roots are soiled, allowing rainwater to sink and link the soil; thus preventing it from being washed away easily, but in places where there are no trees, it becomes dry and silvery. Rain falls on hard ground and flows on the surface causing flooding and carrying a fertile layer of soil – where the plant grows well. When all the ground is gone, there is nothing left but a worthless desert.
Logic: If deforestation continues → the soil becomes arid, rainwater does not sink and keeps the soil -→ floods sweep away the fertile soil → forests turn into deserts.
