Environmental pollution is one of the impacts of human activities on the earth: It is also one of the biggest problems of the world today. Environmental pollution is the cause of several diseases that most people are unaware of. There are four types of pollution: air pollution, land pollution, water pollution, and noise pollution.
Most air pollution comes from the burning of fossil fuels, from vehicles, factories, airplanes and rockets. This can cause acid rain which damages water, soil and plants. Air pollution also causes the greenhouse effect which leads to global warming, polar ice melt, sea level rise and land shortage.
Soil pollution is the result of dumping plastics or other inorganic waste on the ground and excessive use of chemical fertilizers in agriculture. The long-term effects of soil pollution are contaminated vegetation and reduced soil fertility.
Water pollution is the result of dumping pollutants such as detergents, pesticides, oils and other chemicals into the river, which makes the water source dirty or polluted. The blockage of garbage in the river can also cause pollution. The effects of water pollution include destruction of river and lake ecosystems and pollution of groundwater, surface water and seawater.
Noise pollution is caused by loud and unpleasant sounds of vehicles, railroads, airplanes and jet engines, machinery, factories and musical instruments. It can cause stress and psychological and health problems for people such as increased rates of heart disease and damage to hearing.
Environmental pollution is becoming an increasingly serious problem or threat that needs attention as soon as possible not only for environmental purposes, but also for the people living in it.

5. Task 5 Unit 9 Grade 10 Reading
Work in groups. Discuss the types of pollution in your neighborhood and their consequences. (Work in groups. Discuss the types of pollution in the area and their results.)
Guide to answer
There is soil pollution in my neighbourhood. People throw much garbage on the ground, which makes the soil contaminated. This also creates/causes the decrease of soil fertility and the production of rice is getting more and more difficult. Besides, water pollution is also a big problem. People throw garbage into the rivers and lakes, factories nearby release waste water including poisonous chemicals. Water pollution results in some dead disease like cancer or food poisoning. Fresh water becomes rare and more expensive so some low-income families can’t afford it.
